PostSubject: History part 1   Wed Jan 20, 2010 4:46 pm

Tradition. A ritual passed down through the generations. It’s worth held strong by the belief of its practitioners. I never had much faith in them, until I became.

The first was The Kha. The hunt. Unlike any I had undertaken. This was not for food. Not for skins. This was proof, to my people and to myself. Proof that I was stronger than the beast. Stronger in body and stronger in will.

Three of us set out. Shaw, an experienced, brave hunter and friend of my father, and Janos the hunt master. But this was my Kha. They were there only there to begin the hunt. We tracked the herd of longhorns for two days, until we finally caught up with them. Then, we followed for two more. Watching. Never sleeping, always watching. To hunt any beast would not be a true test. It must be fit. It must be strong. It must be worthy. A stag, young adult, one which could lead the pack. I knew which one it would be within minutes, I was sure the others must as well. But I held my tongue until Janos said the word.

We moved just before daybreak. The others carried spears. I carried only a water skin and the Kha dagger. A long awkwardly curved blade, sharp only at the tip. Slowly, carefully we moved. The herd bolted, this was inevitable, like leaves in the wind, unified as a whole but individually chaotic. This was when we struck. Our moves were harmonious. We worked in unison to separate our prey from its kin. This part was easy. Now my test began. The beast ran, as only one who fears for its life can run. For what seemed like an eternity. Mere hours really. I followed, doggedly. Across an endless sea of dust and barren soil we ran. Through the skeletons of the Boa trees, once lush and green, now long dead. I remember thinking, how much easier it would have been had this begun two days ago. But that was the point; I was supposed to be exhausted. My legs pumped acid. The sun burned against my skin more than it ever had before. The sweat stung my eyes. My lungs struggled to hold breath, but still I followed. My only reprieve came from the water skin at my side. My ability to carry that which I needed to persevere, my only advantage. But still the longhorn continued. Hours more. The sun, nearing its rest, cast glorious amber light across the planes. The beast and I, both at barely a walking pace now, each step a lifetimes worth of effort. Then it stopped. Legs shaking, it collapsed. Its strength exhausted, it could do naught but accept it’s fate. Time at this point stood still. The wind blew strong, yet between the beast and I there was nothing but stillness. Our eyes locked, our chests heaving in almost unison. I dropped to a knee and held the beasts head in my hand. The beast’s heart accepted the dagger without resistance, but this was only a formality at this point. The Kha was over.

Where i ripped the idea off from.
