PostSubject: !!! Attention Players!!! What do you actually want?    Fri Aug 17, 2012 9:28 am

So...

..I'm thinking about what i should be working on next.

Don't get me wrong, i still love shadow run... but i screwed up. I set up for a proactive game when i have reactive players.

Which got me to thinking, how do i avoid a similar issue next time?

I can't ask you to specify a game, i tried that... nobody wanted to play the wining option.

So what i'm asking you this time is what elements do you really want to see in my next game?

What do you mean elements Matt? i hear you ask... well its hard to explain because there are so many but i will give you some examples and hopefully you can figure it out from there;

Do you like or dislike the following;

High fantasy
Grim dark
Sci fi
Games with a big over arching plot
games where players drive the plot
games which run for a long time and involve multiple stories
short games based around one story
Detailed pre made worlds
Worlds that the players help to build
Lots of magic
no magic
Lots of character creation rules
Basic rules to shape the game rather then control it
Games where you get to build an empire
Killing monsters and finding loot
Games with mysteries to be solved

ehh i could keep going and going here but hopefully you get the gist.

Long story short there is no wrong answers here.

Tell me what you like

Tell me what you want to see more of in my games

Tell me what you want to see less of in my games

say anything.

If you don't think i will understand you just say it anyway and i will ask questions.

Please just respond in some way.

I want to either run, or play in a long running campaign again. Something with a big over arching story line. While most games I run do tend to get cut short, there is always a bigger plot in the back ground. This being said if you do not wish to dm matty, I will happily give something a go again. rest assured I will not make the same mistakes I did with mass effect. However if you are still keen to dm, then I will not, its probably better if we get one game right before having multiple running. However I am still keen to get in on shadow run.

My point was the two above mentioned items were off topic and not answers to my questions.

Thanks you for the offer to run something, it's not that i want to take a break i just want to find a game with a good flow i can get stuck into.

To answer this a appropriately as possible:

I have learned from Shadowrun that I don't want to play something that involves so much work on the rules and power management.
I want to play anything that Matt is running and really into.
I would be erection worthy happy with the following.

Role play heavy L5R.

WOD group dynamic. As in possibly werewolf the forsaken where players are a pack.

D&D. I actually like 4th Ed. It makes sense to me and level based role playing although a bit gay, generally makes mechanics easy. I am cool with 3 or 3.5 as well. Lets face it Matty you can DM the fuck out of D&D

Deadlands combat heavy.

Discworld gurps.

I would cum blood if you ran one of these.

A game where I don't have to do anything between sessions where I can just turn up, kill some time with friends and the go home?

I would love to keep doing shadowrun.
I know I have been a prick with this game. I just need some time to create and learn the theory of the game.
I think it would be cool to have it more player driven so we could work.

have it so we can write our actions on the forums as well as have like a meeting for the players where we do team work things that we have organised on the forums.

I know jd loves this game so it would be great to keep it going.

Ok lets have a look at some of these.

Cool, i understand that.

Hornet wrote:

and that

Hornet wrote:

Yeah i love L5R but it would just end up being You, JD and I.

Hornet wrote:

Not sure i understand you fully here so if you feel like expanding it would be appreciated.

Hornet wrote:

Ehh i have no real problem with 4e so to speak except with the fact that combats are soooooo slow. The rest of my issues with the system i think i could overcome if not for the combat thing.

3/3.5/Pathfinder i cbf'd with. Actually i may do it if i got to make the players templates for their chr and level them up.

Hornet wrote:
Deadlands combat heavy.

Expand please? Why combat heavy for Deadlands? (i'm not saying in any way that your wrong, i just want to know why this is an attractive option for you.)

Hornet wrote:
Discworld gurps.

It's so damn hard to think like Terry. The other problem with games like that is everyone tries to be funny and there is nothing less funny then a group of people sitting around trying to be funny.

Why was this a question?

While i love Shadowrun it's a hell of a lot of work.

We are into the third month of playing it, how much more time do you think you need?

I am not 100% sure what you mean by this sentence but when it comes to player driven i can only lead a horse to water.

Replace the word "meeting" with the word "session" and that is exactly what we have now?!?

angry_dan wrote:

The game needs more then JD's love to make it worth continuing.

Oh I see. My bad.
And you are welcome, if you ever do, just let me know.

Aside from the big over arching story line I already mentioned. What I want in a game:
something that is both player driven and dm driven. Players should have some control, but not total.
something that you will enjoy running, a bored dm does nut a good game make.
Something challenging, something beyond the typical dnd hack n slash.

And most importantly, to reiterate patty's want
Something that has boobies, everything is better with boobies.

Can i convince you to expand on that sentence?

Something new, well of not new, then not entirely the same. Yeah DnD can be a lot of fun, but really over the years as a group we have really done DnD to death. As much as every DM tries to make it different, and i do applaud all the different DM's takes on DnD, it does eventually boil down to the same thing. "Party see's a monster/group of monsters. Party attacks. Party gains XP."

What I want to see is a break from this style of roleplaying. This is a reason I am so keen to get in on shadowrun, it could not be further from this.

But then maybe we do not need something new, perhaps we need something old, something that we have not done in a while? Or just not done much of?

Champions? We have not played this in quite a while.

WoD? This is something I would be happy to run for ya matty, either modern day, or medieval. Advantage here is also the variety, we could be werewolves, we could be vampires, we could be humans, or any other range of miscellaneous creatures of the night.

Deadlands? Yeah we have done this a lot as well, but DEADLANDS

OR, to suggest something entirely different, how about a boardgame night? I do have a crap load of them, just a sampling of what I have: Warcraft, world of warcraft, Lord of the Rings Risk, Vampire: Prince of the city, Order of the Stick.

I should point out the reason i am asking this is because of assumptions.

I have run games with and for most of you for a long time and i think i have your likes and dislikes fairly well figured...

...but...

... in saying that i don't know for sure. Some times we can think we are all on the same page when really were not.

for example;

I know that if a suggest a game that's Sci-fi or has guns in it i am unlikely to get Dean interested to play.

I know if i use the words "player driven" to describe my game Patty probably won't sign up.

Or if i say the game will be a non serious hack n' slash fest, JD will probably lose interest.

There are other things out there like this for all of you, some of them i may know about but there is more then likely a fair few i don't.

So if you can think of something like this for yourself please post it up.

Yeah you loose me at board games, they tend to put me to sleep fairly quickly.

However thanks for the extra info.

im loving playing shadowrun also. i still dont like my character but thats my own fault for being indecisive with what i was building at the time.
i like character concept the idea of a character.

as for what we are doing compared to the possible alteration to our game dynamic.

player driven.

  • the players all have their own goals wants and needs they do all this on the forums.

  • all this crap is done on forums not just down time, this is like character creation on an extended scale.

  • shadowruns are organised into the characters "story" and the players organise the job with their contacts.

  • all players are contacts to one and other. interact through forums and network between themselves themselves.

  • posts have a time stamp, as well as information for each player is noted at the top of the post. so everyone knows what they might want to read.

  • gm is an overlooker and cage rattler. random encounters and events can happen through a single character "story", or a notification board type set up where something like news and current events in the city.

as we have seen we can talk heaps of shit between sessions.
this game requires alot of time it seems to get players moving.
each player goes at their own pace and everyone can play without having to really enter into any shadowruns at all.

i think what my idea is, is a world/character building game with sessions every so often for shadowrun.

confusion, questions, thoughts, burns, expansions, interest and comments?

Sounds like you want to try out Vampire LARPING because that sounds like how they run their games. But their games are generally more politically minded and more often that not it's ends up being emo kids circle jerking about how good all their characters are. Which is a shame because vampire is a really interesting game.

i have been building a latent swordmage concept.
he is looking for Masamune swords. either swords made by the man himself or a prodigue of his.
it is a write of passage for his family line. they make a pilgrimage to find their place in the village or the world.

indeed. this is where the contacts come in and the group can hear the "suppliers" (characters) idea and what roll the other players are required for. allows each player to have a leader roll as well as hired help.

of course the gm can give players jobs from the players other contacts. you also have power of the world. so the world doesnt just sit there, events happen. corps fall apart businesses spring up gangs get brave. news happens. players can react to these events.

Matt wrote:

no party concept.
you dont rely on the party members more then needed. you call them up for a job and then when the job is done if you are friends you hang out of not you get paid then go your separate ways.
pvp possible for backstabbing characters.
no even splits with the money due to characters paying what they believe is fair or what is negotiated.
as a basic example flux will have the power to hack every piece of tec we own if she decides she wants to.
you make rolls against one and other, as well as everyone else unless its in your characters mutual understanding.

indeed we can. with the change in format it would be required.
also have things like
shadowrun!
for anyone watching whats happening.

you dont need alot of players to be committed, you just need some committed with the others being a shadow in the background.
they can come in whenever and add their two cents to the world.
have sections for reactive and proactive players.
those with not much time can look for their name stamp.
i would get into it and im sure jd could keep it up.
i know people are busy with their lives and such. but those who can only post small bits can do their little bit when they can.
the shadowruns and such are all time stamped. the info is there with anyone who has the option to join outlined in it.
the shadowruns dont have to be done straight away its a time that is changeable to a point and can be organised as a session.

player driven. you only need to watch some things that involve the world.

consider it a forum based game that can be played on occasion.
dont need sessions at all if we dont want.

Again, I really like the sound of this idea matty. In fact it reminds me quite a bit of a computer game I have wanted to design for the last couple of years, just haven't had the time or patience. Although in my pc game its just one playable character, who is the lord of a house, or region or what not, instead of a group.

But anyway, I especially like how each character is free to work with, or against, each character as much as they see fit. A good way to ensure those who do not have as much time can interact as much as they can, while others who are more available can play as much as they are able.

Question Time:
Does the city state we belong to have its own standing army? militia?

If yes, do we have any control over this army?

Would large pitched battles between neighbours be likely? Or like rome, is there some way this is stopped, and is it more about assassins, and intrigue?

What is the world around the character like? You said fantasy, but full on fantasy, where elves, dwarves, orcs, goblins, and magic are all apart of everyday life, or are some things rarer? (eg do elves and dwarves occupy there own territories on the fringes of humanity, and as such are rarely seen by most people)

And this brings up another point, is this a human empire? (why not orcs or elves, or dwarves, etc ect)

im sure ill think of more later

*snip* is used when you are quoting all of the post above and its a large block of text. It's simply so people don't feel obliged to read it again. It is on par with me starting a post with "@angrey_dan"

player driven. you only need to watch some things that involve the world.

I need to be everyone and everything that isn't a PC Dan. What happens when you want to talk to a non PC contact? What happens when you want to go steal something from a corp? What happens when you want to do anything that involves anything not directly controlled by you or another player?

dont need sessions at all if we dont want.
but you do have the final say.

I don't actually have final say dan, i'm just not interested in running it. If you or someone else wants to run it in the forums i can set up an area for you to do it from, just let me know.

Sure Dan... you win.

im no history making sense of is. so big scary backwards times confuses me. give me a spell to flatten villages and ill play a session.
or ill be attempting to make the town into a cult. but knowing what im doing same as shaddowrun. will take me a long time to come up with the idea.

You said it yourself, you haven't got your head around shadowrun yet so not too much time lost.

Yeah it would have something, but i was thinking it would be like feudal times when lords kept their own garrisons and had to supply men at their kings command. Maybe not in that exact terminology but that was my general idea.

Yes and yes.

Have not got that far along in the process yet.
