PostSubject: The Steelbloom Estate   The Steelbloom Estate EmptyMon 29 Oct 2012 - 13:12

SteelBloom Manor
The manor comprises of the Great Hall (accessed via the Vestibule) which adjoins the Library, Scullery, Master bedchamber and three guest rooms. The manor is maintained by the Piers family who act as the caretakers, groundskeepers, cooks, maids and butler. Outside, the walled 3000 square meter grounds contain stables, privy and gardens. The grounds also comprise a small two story barracks capable of housing 50 people . It includes one large living/sleeping area, a kitchen/mess area and a small latrine/washroom annex.

The Steelbloom Estate Southparkmoat

The Furnace
The Furnace is rumored to be as old as the mountains themselves. Workers here have converted ore into ingots for countless generations. They have smelted at the behest of Dwarven Lords, tribal Kings, Imperial regents & Kings again.

The Steelbloom Estate Kursprogramm3

The Furnace is located on the outskirts of Blackwell castle and smelts over 40% of all the ore pulled out of the mountains in the Iron Ridge region. The Furnace is worked by a crew of around 20 serf tradesmen and as Lord of the Furnace you lay claim to 10% of everything that is smelted with in its walls. On average, after your serfs are fed, running costs are removed and the King takes his share, the generated income is around 400g per month. The profitability of the Furnace however, is heavily tied to both the success of the mines and the safety of the trade routes.

The Mouth
The wharf district of Royalwell sees a lot of river trade traffic heading south towards the capital. Plenty of business goes down on the wharves, the river folk have never been overly keen on others getting involved though.

The Steelbloom Estate CD10_003

As Lord of the wharf's at the rivers mouth you are responsible for both maintaining and improving the towns docks and also collecting the Kings tax form the ships captains for their use. At any time there will be around 30 fishing vessels and 10 river trading barges docked in this area, either unloading cargo form the south or loading up for the return trip. The Mouth is maned by 15 serfs including the Wharf master who over see the tax collecting and general maintenance. After running costs are removed and the Kings share is take the Mouth generates about 100g per month. The profitability of the Mouth is heavily tied to southern trading and the need for fish from the lake.

Introductions, inspection and auditing.

Beginning with the manor I will conduct an inspection of my holdings.
  • I will introduce myself to the Piers family using a laid back approach rather than being snobbish and aloof. The goal being that as long as we each understand and respect the others position a more informal relationship can be fostered. This paves way for more open communication which I will rely on due to my cultural unfamiliarity. I will need information on the region (Iron Ridge) as well as surrounding settlements. I will ask to for some common clothes to wear for expeditions into the general populace.

Moving onto the Furnace for my inspection and to press the flesh.
  • I will again introduce myself in a similar way attempting to seed a similar relationship with the Villeins and appear approachable by the serfs that work the furnace. I wish to understand the furnace workings as things are now so I can attempt to develop improvements later. This of course will be slow process with lots of back and forth.

Then onto the Mouth for similar things.
  • As above plus I need to know what dangers we face trading via the rivers and estuaries, all of the protocols for the management of the wharf and it's security. I need to learn the other trading ports, their allegiances, the ebb and flow of our fishing industry, the known criminal element, notable vessels and their crew. What kind of trade passes through the Mouth and the general scope of trade via water in the Iron Ridge region and surrounding settlements up to and including Port Newland.

Roving war bands, bandits, the wildlife, submerged flotsam and stuff.

The protocol is as follows;
  • Vessel comes into dock.
  • Vessel is approached by the dock master or one of his underlings prior to unloading or disembarking.
  • Information about the vessel is recorded on the docking register; Information includes - name of ship, name of captain, cargo, purpose of visit, intended date of departure.
  • Captain of vessel signs the register.
  • Captain pays a docking fee to docking master (or his representative)
  • Ship can be unloaded or disembarked, docking master (or his representative) put the money from docking fee in the lock box in the dock masters office.

Prior to the recent uprising, all trade through these docks was allied and sanctioned by the Dol Soroth Empire. Since the uprising the boats have mostly been small interdependent traders or local fishing boats.

From the dock masters understanding, fishing this year is good.

The dock master tells you that there are less boats now then there has been for years. Most of the trade is stuff coming out of the mines heading south and stuff not locally produced coming upriver from Port Newland.

The Steelbloom Estate Kisuke11

"Mr. Piers, Pridwyn?" Duke Steelbloom lounged casually on the sofa, thoughtfully smoking his long and elegant pipe.
"Would you please assemble your family in the hall", the Duke sips his pipe exhaling perfect rings of smoke, "I have come to a decision and it concerns all of us."

Once the Piers family has gathered in the great hall Aizen emerges from the library to address them.

The duke looks each family member in the eye before beginning his address. "There are going to be some changes around the estate and we are all going to have to adjust to these changes. I have decided to re-purpose the building that you have been staying in and as such you will all have to re-locate," Duke Steelbloom pauses, "as a consolation I would like to invite you to take residence in the manor proper."

He again looks each family member in the eye before continuing, "I trust this agreement is suitable? At least until renovations begin for a new wing to house the stewards of Steelbloom estate."

The duke moves toward the library turning his head to the side, "Mr. Piers? A moment please."

Duke Steelbloom stands next to his desk as Mr. Piers enters the room. "Did you have anything you wished to say?

"If there is nothing then please sit." Aizen steps away from his desk extending his arm in invitation. "You will want to write this down."

Over the course of the next hour or so, Duke Steelbloom and his steward Pridwyn Piers, outlined the nessecary requirements to;
  • Create a temporary tent city to house the new serfs, check their health and capacities and feed them.
  • Renovate the manor - a new wing for the stewards to occupy
  • Reconstruct the serf's quarters into a barracks for the temporarily housed new serfs.

All that is left to do is to contact the relevant tradespeople and requisition the materials.

"I shall leave this matter in your capable hands Pridwyn but do not hesitate to contact me if any issues arise."

.

Lord Aizen lounges lazily on the sofa smoking his eloquent pipe. He inhales then calls out upon seeing Pridwyn pass by the library. "Pridwyn!? I can see you are busy but you should stop a moment and relax." Exhaling a series of perfect smoke rings, he motions Pridwyn enter and sit at the Iron Duke's desk.

"You seem to have a lot on your mind but please share some tea with me?" As he speaks Aizen's gaze shifts from Pridwyn to the tea set placed upon the three-legged table before him. Continuing on Lord Aizen asks, "How are the plans and preparations going around the estate Pridwyn?" Aizen pours the tea slowly into the two cups.

"When do you think you will have it ready to commence? I only ask as there are quite a few people currently living on our doorstep and I think we would all be more comfortable if they had they're own place to stay."

The Iron Duke motions the tea cup poured for Pridwyn towards him then takes up his cup and relaxes back onto the sofa, adjusting his pipe and producing more perfect smoke rings.

.
In game date; August 742DS, Year of the crustacean.

Steelbloom Estate: I wish to utilise unused land around the estate for a training area for basic combat training as well as a large vegetable garden. I would ideally like to keep some livestock for food such as; pigs, sheep, chickens, geese, ducks, turkey, goats, etc..

Steelbloom Barracks: I wish to construct a barracks on the estate that is capable of housing up to 50 persons. This will provide housing for my serfs initially. Labor can be provided by my serfs but design and resources need to be acquired elsewhere. The barracks should have a large cellar for food stuffs etc and possibly be 2 stories to accommodate large capacity with a small footprint.

Steelbloom Serfs: Current count stands at [39];
  • 1 x Blacksmith
  • 1 x Woodworker
  • 1 x Leatherworker
  • 1 x Stonemason
  • 1 x Tailor
  • 4 x Trade persons (GM help me out I don't have a record of their trades)
  • 10 x Adult Males
  • 10 x Adult Females
  • 10 x Unskilled / Children

The plan with these serfs is to assess their basic skills ie; Literacy, Numeracy and Skills (trade skills, combat skills, interesting personal skills).
The serfs that can read and write will be tasked with teaching the others to do the same. (beginning with the children).
The serfs that have trade skills will be required to produce something of their trade (to asses their skill and to teach others).
I intend to design a regime consisting of basic education (literacy & numeracy), basic self-defense (martial art & weapon skills) and basic trade skills (fishing, tailoring, etc).

Should any of these initial plans be flawed due to a lack of resource I am then keen to pay to 'plug the gap' to achieve the above.

The Furnace: I wish to discuss with the foreman/man in charge about any important issues and the production of the furnace. I will listen to any suggestions in regard to increasing the production capacity above it's current rate and the option of 'upskilling' the current workforce to facilitate this.

The Mouth: I wish to discuss with the Riverfolk about any important issues and the daily running of the Mouth. I will listen to any suggestions in regard to maintenance and improvements that may require immediate attention. What short comings do the riverfolk currently endure that prohibits the Mouth from rising to becoming the shining jewel of Blackwell trade and commerce.

The Census: Once I have gathered all the data then sorting and collation should take place. The serfs can be employed to undertake this task as the census forms were designed with this in mind. Once the forms are sorted then information can be gleamed regarding the state of our populace. As noted elsewhere I will be maintaining a short list of trades persons that fit my criteria for eligibility for guild master appointment. The census will provide us with the following information*;
  • Number of people living in each dwelling
  • Number of men
  • Number of women
  • Age of said people
  • Level of education
  • Trade-skills
  • Access to amenities

* I will need to re-visit the census setup info to populate this data based on our generic scale.

The tradesmen can all read and write at some basic level, though you wouldn't class any of them as fully literate. The exception to this is the tailor who seems to be able to read and write well.
The rest of the slaves literacy levels are lower then this with some of the adults being able to read a few random words.

The tradesmen will require equipment, materials and work spaces to produce something in there defined trade.
For arguments sake equiping each tradsmen in the basic tools of their trade will cost around 5g pp. But larger work areas like a smiths forge or large lathe would be more.

Please let me know how you wish to proceed in this regard.

Yes it has already been created.
But I do require a new wing of the manor to be built for the stewards. I'll use this to network my tradespersons with the Iron Ridge tradespersons.

Please let me know how you wish to proceed in this regard.

I have a few ideas for the tradesmen (Paying appropriate costs);
  • Have the blacksmith pick a team to inspect the quality of tools and such used by our current aglab serfs and Riverfolk fishermen then challenge them for improvements. The Furnace will be made available.
  • Have the Woodworker and Stonemason inspect the quality of the infrastructure in Royalwell and around Moosehead Keep and challenge them with planning their restoration. Includes labor requirements and further tradesperson networking and recruitment.
  • Have the Tailor and Leatherworker apprentice the children and women. My own garments will be prototype garment designs for their challenge of mass producing cheap stylish clothes. Designs should reflect the requirements due to weather, climate, daily life, etc..
  • I will take Captain Donk's offer of training for the remaining male serfs complementing this basic training with some of my own (mainly Judo and Karate).
  • At some stage I will need to know the 4 remaining tradesmens trades to plan further use for them.

I will need to know the going rate for each role my serfs will now be taking (laborer/tradesperson/apprentice) and take the average as their monthly income. They would then have; Housing, Amenities and paid Jobs with free schooling and upskilling. I am looking for guild leader material.

I will begin some market analysis here in Iron Ridge as well as using the census data to interview merchants and propose the forming of a merchant guild here for them.

  • Appoint an 'Iron Trade Counsel' where each guild master convenes to discuss the activities, concerns and goals of each guild on a monthly basis.

  • Obtain relevant information to plan and construct a stockade at Royalwell to help fortify and protect the investments in the area.

  • Using the Royalwell stockade as a prototype initiate a plan to construct additional stockades at Ferryside, North Waterdam, Mudcrest and Carrwater.

  • Send envoys to investigate the current state of affairs as well as needs and expectations of Royalwell, Ferryside, Mudcrest and North Waterdam.

  • Establish an efficient and secure passage between aforementioned villages to facilitate trade routes, military easement, etc.

Also the three bold items above. I wish to pursue those but the guild formation will focus on the merchants for now. Time permitting also the Furnace staff.

Ok lets get this done, do you want me to come up with NPC's now or are you happy to assume they exist and then me fabricate them as required?

Also remind me what trades we are doing this for again.

The latter option works fine for me but know that I will be moderately interacting with these NPC's.

I intend to begin primarily with the 'Merchants/Traders' while allocating spare time to the Furnace staff as my 'tradesperson' prototype guild secondarily.

I want to give Cartography (Default IQ-5, Navigation-4) a go and create my own map of the Iron Ridge to assist me in protecting the northern and the southern borderlands.

Ok Re the Stockades, correct me if i am wrong but you are intending them to be constructed from wood and built to house 10 men?

As to location, you believe the best location to build would be along the banks of the river on the east side of Royalwell near the mouth. Basic stockades can be designed and built by anybody with the relevant trade skill for the base material or a person with the engineering skill.

"Pridwyn? Pridwyn! I must speak with you a moment!" Aizen calls as he passes into the great hall from the vestibule of Steelbloom manner.

Blowing like a gale through the great hall and into the library Aizen calls, "Tea in the library Mrs. Piers. Quick as you please.!"

The Steelbloom Estate 1203647249_aharasmile

Duke Steelbloom sits at his desk a moment and begins sifting through the mountain of paperwork as if searching for a certain document. As Pridwyn appears at the doorway to the library Aizen stops rummaging and moves to the sofa. He motions Pridwyn towards the desk and produces his pipe from inside his sleeve.

Mrs. Piers appears in the doorway with the tea and waits to be noticed. "Wonderful timing Mrs. Piers!" She pours the tea for Duke Steelbloom and his Steward, her husband, before leaving as quietly as she entered.

Lighting his pipe with a flourish, Aizen reclines upon the sofa and draws deeply. Perfect smoke rings waft elegantly between the two men.

"Pridwyn where are we with the renovations to the manor? The grounds are coming along nicely and the serfs now have their own space. I believe it is time you and your family are rewarded for the hard work and sacrifice you have endured. So how does the renovation progress?"

[OOC] I am just touching base with the Manor and occupants and ensuring that all projects and enterprises are moving forwards.
  • Barracks (serf accommodation) - Check
  • Vegetable garden (sustainable food source) - Check
  • Animals bred for slaughter (sustainable food source) - Check
  • Stewards Wing Renovation (manor steward accommodation) - ???

I would also like to press Pridwyn for any information of interest that he might be privy to and the general state of affairs about the manor.

.

"Pridwyn! We need to spruce this place up a bit for the month long stay of the Agricultural Advisor traveling from Rivering. I'll pass on any 'requirements' he may have."

[OOC] I'll try to ask for any relevant requirements the advisor may have (including gear) and have them met whilst staying in the Iron Ridge. I will also appoint an entourage of spare 222's and P.I's.

is this thread in character? im confused now.

Anywho.

By sprucing up the place do you just want your servants to clean extra hard or are you spending money on improving the aesthetics?

As to the Adviser, who from this point on shall be referred to as Mr Green, he needs mainly a guard to keep him safe and a horse and covered wagon to move his supplies around as he does his surveying.

Since you are organizing the troop movements at the moment how many spare 222's and P.I.s do you have to set to this task?

Certain portions have been, if you'll notice, for flavor and fluff.

Money isn't a problem. We may have further guests so it's required. Mr. Green should deem it acceptable at the least (so both clean and aesthetics).

I will either 'requisition' or rent with vicious haggling the equipment Mr. Green requires.

I'll also ask the tailor if he will create a gown for Mr. Green as a gift (bill me) which he can present as a parting gift (i assume this would allow time).

On that note I may call in a favour for some overkill/insurance (have Linda Lonewolf babysit as well).
