PostSubject: Prickly predicaments    Tue Apr 09, 2013 4:16 am

September rolls around and Furl’s trade caravan returns to Blackwell to collect the iron ore which awaits him, but this month Furl does not return alone.

His caravan is accompanied by a military column of near 500 soldiers flying banners of the Ruby King, led by the infamous Dragon blooded warrior known as General Cactus. The column is composed of troops drawn from the Ruby Kings Penal Legion, along with a full platoon of outriders and two full platoons of the much feared Red Fang skirmishers. The Red Fangs are made up exclusively of Gnolls and they have carved themselves a bloody reputation through many campaigns in service of the Ruby King. Rumours of the Fangs feasting on the bodies of their fallen enemies have done terrible damage to the moral of many forces who have stood opposed to their Kings creeping influence.
The column detaches itself from Furls trade caravan at Royalwell and marches North West around the lakes bank for two days before setting up a camp and beginning to fortify the location.

“Glorious friends!”

Furl begins once he arrives in Blackwell.

“It is always such a joyous time for me when my duties bring me once more to your awe-inspiring city. My King, Mankar III , widower of the setting sun, sends a greeting to you, King Blackwell, as he considers you a true brother and wishes only for your health and prosperity. It is for this reason he has tasked the esteemed General Cactus to accompany me on my journey to assist with the protection of the Iron Ridge in a time of such turmoil in our beloved Faraway. In times such as these, brother must stand besides brother in defence of their land against the unjust incursions of such villainous enemies. General Cactus sends his apologies that he cannot be here with me today, and begs your eminences forgiveness. He has asked the honour of an audience with you as soon as his troops are properly settled. “

Later, at a private council, King Blackwell announces,

“I am not sure I like the idea of these Ruby King troops sitting on my doorstep, what general brings shock troops to a defensive operation? On a side note, I decided that it would be more beneficial if we altered our trade agreements so the Rivering Merchant Guild have better access to our Iron Trade. Letting them have first option at the lion’s share of our mined ore sounds decent, let this Sun marrying desert donkey have whatever they don’t take. Make that happen would you Dukes, I think I will ride out with my guard to inspect that giant skull at Royalwell!”

As the door closes on the Kings retreating silhouette Captain Donk sighs and swears under his breath.

As the king leaves General Melchid stands and shouts after him.

"Your grace wait! Oh crap. Donk get that impulsive man back here. Surely he can see that breaking a contract with a somewhat reluctantly allied nation, while they have an army camped mere miles from our poorly defended keep is political suicide. I am no diplomat but that is foolish."

He looks at the other dukes imploringly for back up.

Micken regards Melchid,

"I'm going to have to agree with you there. I don't trust people at the best of times, but Furl camping an army outside our door seems rather alarming to me. We shouldn't do anything to upset him. We should also keep a close eye on him and his army camping at Royalwell. We must send some scouts there immediately, or maybe Aizen would be a faster alternative to scout out these troops. As for Furl, I know just the person to keep an eye on him... me! I'll see if i can... 'gather' any information about his true intentions in our lands. I'm not much of a military man though. Melchid, where are our armies at the moment? If he attacks, what sort of chance do we have against him?"

"Well my elusive companion as we stand we have 2 companies of mercenaries in the keep, but one of those companies; including it's commander, will be travelling East with me within the next few days. We still have the 222 here but realistically not a force strong enough for the sort of threat a cohesive military like Furl's could pose. I suggest you do gather this information. Lovely just whispered in my ear that Furl has eyes everywhere and may have caught wind of the King's plan to sour his deal. Perhaps this is why he has come so heavily escorted this time. Bah. Well let us not invite Regicide today. I suggest we demand the King reconsider, at least until we can flesh out our defences and get some cohesion amongst our ranks. What we have is barely a Van Guard."

Donk clears his throat.

"I will convince the King that we are working on his request and hopefully once the smell of that trader whore vanishes from his from his clothing he will forget about the whole idea. For the time being, with Ivan steeping down from his position as a duke how are we going to handle the defense of our southern border?"

[OOC] That would be you Timboza! Laughing

"I'll take responsibility for the South,". Aizen will volunteer for the responsibility nonchalantly. Perpetually emotionless from beneath his green and white striped hat.
"If it suits Captain Donk and the Duchy."

"The true purpose of the War Party escort that Furl and Cactus have brought to our doorstep should be of great interest to us all. Is it that bad outside our little Kingdom that such drastic steps are to be taken? Perhaps this news should be brought to the attention of our friends in Rivering as I believe they will find it interesting also. "

Aizen pauses briefly. "I think now would be an opportune time to present the King with the matter of conscription. To pass it as law now would surely ease his mind, even for a moment while we see what this exhibition is all about? "

Melchid scrunches his face up into a look of contemplation. He pulls out his pipe and allows the freshly backed leaf to smolder.

"Yes yes... This conscription idea, although very sound in theory, would work a lot better if we had citizens to conscript. Er bah as it were. What little people we have will help as long as it doesn't take them away from essential duties. It is not as though we have a great number of late adolescent or early adult men and women lounging around without source of employ. You know, simply waiting for some sort of government hand out so they can purchase their whores and trinkets. This after all is not the dreaded dark lands south know as the Frankariston of Bogonia."

with a slightly confused look on his face and mouthing the words, 'Frankariston of Bogonia'. Micken turns his attention back to Aizen

'I would be cautious with informing Rivering of Furls movements. I would hate to incite a battle on our lands, although if Furl is planning something whilst he is here I would rather have Rivering here to help.
Any ways, it seems we are agreed that we shall start a conscription of the people and that Aizen shall look after the borders to the south. If no one needs anything else of me I would take my leave to...'investigate' Furl further.'

Micken turns to the group to see if anyone has something to say...

After witch, Micken will enter his invisible and ethereal state find Furl and follow him reading his every thought and looking for clues in his chambers as to his true intentions.

"Well Duke Steelbloom's border defiantly isn't the smallest or most easily defended but if he is keen for the task and none of the other Dukes abject then i see no problem in him taking control of it."

Furl is currently staying at the Moose head inn. His day to day activities seem to be legitimate enough. He spends his days brokering deals, seeing to the needs of his caravan and organizing orders and arrangement's for his future trips. The closest to shadowy operations you witness is a few of the local townspeople who meet with Furl of an evening to trade local roomers and gossip for coin. The information generally concerns the news of interest regarding the local tradesmen, works being carried out by the King, his Dukes or any of the local business's, or anything else that has been happening that the people think Furl might be interested to hear. He thanks each person who visits him and generally gifts them with a few coppers after their chats.

"As a side note, while you lot are all here i have a quick heads up for you. The King is promoting me to the rank of General at my request, mainly because these foreign nobs don't want to have to make nice with some one as lowly as a Captain. Apparently all it takes is a bigger rank in front of my name to polish a turd like me!"

The green and white striped hat stirs at General Donk's words sniping, "Keep polishing and you could become a Duke like Rockbite.". A wry smile crosses Aizen's lips before returning to his ever blank face.

. . . .

Aizen interjects before Donk can leave the meeting, "General Donk I wish to discuss matters regarding the strategies for defending our protectorates. When would be a suitable time and place for such a lengthy discussion?".

"WOW Captain to General in a single promotion, not even in the field. You bypassed Major, Lieutenant Colonel, Colonel, Brigadier General, Major General and Lieutenant General with just a word. Well not since a young Sergeant that looks considerably like myself has there been quite a jump. Well young General congratulations. Do the rank proud, after all you are serving under a king and a king needs good Generals. Bahh Bahh".

General Cactus has his troops fortifying a hilly area not far from the banks of the Kings lake. His slave troops seem to be set to task digging trenches and erecting horse traps around their camp grounds.

He has groups of outriders and Red Fangs patrolling the area between the banks of the Kings Lake and the northern tip of the Western mountains. These groups seem to be driving of or raiding any non Ruby King merchants, Riverring or otherwise.

Your estimation of troops are as follows.

300 Penal legion foot troops
50 Outriders
100 Redfang
50 other (logistics, camp followers etc).
